General objectives

  • Learn about the etiology of cracked teeth, the most frequently affected teeth in the dental arch, and why they occur.

  • Be able to classify each fracture according to current clinical guidelines.

  • Learn a diagnostic protocol and understand the tools available today to simplify the difficult task of obtaining a definitive diagnosis in cases of cracked teeth.

  • Be able to indicate one treatment plan or another depending on the type of longitudinal fissure or fracture present in each case.

  • To be able to determine the prognosis of our restorations in cases of cracked teeth, the survival rate, and possible complications.

  • Knowing how we can prevent clefts in our patients.

  • Incidence of cracked or fractured teeth during the pandemic.

Classification and diagnosis

  • Classification according to the American Association of Endodontists: fissure lines, cracked tooth, fractured cusp, fractured tooth, vertical root fracture.
  • Diagnostic protocol for each case.
  • Signs and symptoms.
  • Additional tests.
  • Current diagnostic tools.

Treatment

  • Monitoring and treatment.
  • Treatment objectives.
  • Most appropriate treatment according to different clinical situations.
  • When to indicate root canal treatment.
  • Most suitable type of restoration.
  • Restoration material.

Block 4

Prognosis, survival rate and complications

  • Cases with excellent, good, poor and disastrous prognosis.
  • Survival rate according to the latest short, medium and long-term studies.
  • Possible complications.
